The 20-year-old rapper, XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was shot and killed during an apparent robbery in Deerfield Beach on Monday. According to the Broward County Police, the rapper was leaving a motorsports store before 4 pm when two men in a dark-colored SUV shot and killed him. According to a 911 dispatch call obtained by, XXXTentacion’s shooter allegedly wore a red mask during the shooting.


Stephanie Martinez, a 29-year-old mother who lives in the neighborhood, told the Associated Press that she was coming back from the pool with her kids when she heard three shots. She drove to the end of the street and saw the rapper’s body in the black BMW in which he was killed. The rapper’s lawyer, David Bogenschutz said detectives believe he was shot in a random robbery while likely planning to buy a motorcycle. He said investigators also told him the slain rapper visited a bank shortly before the shooting and possibly withdrew cash for the purchase.

XXXTentacion was a native of Plantation, Florida who skyrocketed to fame after his hit song “Look at Me” went viral on social media and audio distribution platform SoundCloud in 2016. According to the Billboard website, his album premiered at No. 1 when it was released in March and his album’s single “Sad” peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent 15 weeks on the charts.

The rapper had recently been in trouble with the law, he was awaiting trial for a domestic violence incident. He was accused of punching his pregnant girlfriend. According to the police, he punched her “to where both eyes became shut and victim could not see.” He had been under house arrest while he awaited trial on battery and harassment charges but the house arrest had been lifted back in March. He had pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts, including witness tampering.
