The Food and Drug Administration has finally approved a drug from Cannabidiol (CBD) to treat rare and severe forms of epilepsy.

The new drug is called Epidiolex, the drug derived from CBD does not contain THC the compound in marijuana that gives you the “high.” The FDA approval is only to cover for Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. Dr. Billy Dunn of the FDA said, “The difficult-to-control seizures that patients with Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome experience have a profound impact on these patients’ quality of life. It will provide a significant and needed improvement in the therapeutic approach to caring for people with this condition.”

But the FDA is quick to point out that this is by no means a go-ahead for marijuana-based products, “This is the approval of one specific CBD medication for a specific use. This is a purified form of CBD. It’s being delivered to patients in a reliable dosage form and through a reproducible route of delivery to ensure that patients derive the anticipated benefits,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb.

The FDA warns against falling for companies selling CBD products promising to be pain relievers, anxiety medicines, and cancer cures.

“The promotion and use of these unapproved products may keep some patients from accessing appropriate, recognized therapies to treat serious and even fatal diseases,” Gottlieb said.

Both of the conditions that the drug has been approved to treat have been shown to reduce seizures and return a few children to near-normal function. Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic condition that usually shows up in infants, starting with fever-related seizures and progressing to other, more severe seizure types. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome also causes seizures, usually starting in children aged 3 to 5. “Almost all children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome develop learning problems and intellectual disability,” the FDA said.

The CBD industry has grown tremendously as people have discovered the benefits of CBD Oil and Hemp Oil. Without the high, CBD has been known to help with chronic pain, relieve anxiety, suppress muscle spasms, reduce inflammation, reduce seizures and convulsions just to name a few.
