If you grew up in the 1980’s you had some great underdog films to watch. My Bodyguard, The Rocky films after part I, Revenge of the Nerds etc. The biggest underdog film though was the 1984 classic, The Karate Kid, starring Ralph Macchio and the now deceased, Pat Morita.
You know the story, Daniel (Macchio) moves to a new town, gets bullied in new town, meets Mr. Miyagi (Morita), gets karate and life training from Miyagi (wax on / wax off), takes on the bad boys at local karate dojo (Cobra Kai), and ultimately wins the All Valley Karate Tournament. He wins the tournament with one of the most iconic scenes in American film history. The crane kick to the face of Johnny Lawrence (the star bad boy of rival karate dojo Cobra Kai).
Fast forward almost 30 years to 2018, and the content creators at YouTube Red, the YouTube streaming service much like Netflix and Hulu, have brought Daniel and Johnny back for “Cobra Kai”. The 10-episode series, debuted on May 2, 2018.
The series revolves around a down-and-out Lawrence, who reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. He decides to do so to teach kids being bullied how to stand up for themselves. This reignites his rivalry with a now-successful car dealer Daniel who has kids and a family of his own. The half-hour series will follow the duo addressing demons from their past and present situation surrounding their rivalry. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but there are many twists. One glaring twist is that you actually see that Daniel’s character is kind of an asshole, while Johnny’s character is a much more sympathetic figure.

There was a big campaign by YouTube rolling out of the Cobra Kai series. It was totally awesome! They definitely scored with this one. It is by far the biggest and best title in their original programming. If you haven’t thought about getting a YouTube Red account, you may want to reconsider it to catch this series. It is only $9.99 / month. With the service, you will receive uninterrupted music, ad-free videos, and more. So even after you finish the Cobra Kai series, you will have plenty to enjoy on YouTube Red while you wait for the next season. And, oh yes, there is most certainly going to be another season.
