Just as Todd Akin, the Missouri candidate for the U.S. Senate has been ridiculed for his ignorance and extreme pro-life or anti-abortion position, there is one man who goes him one better in extreme beliefs concerning the abortion issue. That man is Barack Obama.
I don’t have the answers concerning abortion, but this is what I think. I am generally pro-choice and I don’t believe that the life of a fertilized egg as a human being begins at the moment of conception. To me, the fertilized egg is not nearly a baby, and the sooner the woman who wants an abortion gets one, the better. This is why I favor a morning-after pill. The reason I say the earlier the better is at some point I believe that the fertilized egg develops enough on its journey to become a baby. I do not know exactly when this occurs, but at some point it should be protected and its right to life preserved. I think that a decent society should legally protect what is a baby even if it is still in the womb but viable. I would not allow third-term abortions and most late second-term ones also. But I do not claim to have all the answers.
There are some people I would classify as extremists on the pro-choice side of the issue who can justify late term abortions. This means that a baby that is viable outside of the womb can be aborted. I think it is safe to say that most people would conclude that this is not acceptable. I have the belief that most people would not permit an abortion – let’s say one month before delivery.
What would happen if a baby survived an abortion attempt? Do you think that the baby should be left to die and discarded as medical waste? Barack Obama does and here is the proof. While he was in the Illinois state senate, Barack Obama voted to deny protections to babies who were born alive after an attempted abortion in 2001, 2002, and 2003. He has claimed that he did this to protect the rights of women to have an abortion, but in 2003 he did not even vote for a bill in committee that had the same protection of a federal bill that protected the right of a woman to have an abortion while providing protection for babies born alive after attempted abortions. The federal bill passed 98-0 in the U.S. Senate.
Todd Akin made a stupid statement and should be embarrassed by his ignorance and extremism, but at least he apologized for his comments. Barack Obama seems to be immune from criticism about his extreme positions on abortion. Here is a man who does not even believe in protecting a baby that has actually survived an attempt at abortion and it has not even been brought up in conjunction with Akin’s comments. I cannot think of a more extreme and despicable position concerning these issues.
