Researchers from London‘s Imperial college and our own Harvard University crunched the data and came out with this new startling new statistic. According to their findings the total number of people with diabetes in the world has risen from 153m to 347m. The authors did note that it wasnt all because we eat garbage, 70% they say was due to people living longer. However they did also called for better treatment and detection saying.
“Unless we develop better programs for detecting people with elevated blood sugar and helping them to control their weight, diabetes will continue to impose a major burden on health systems around the world.”
This is good news for medical companies that are currently taking in 22 billion a year in Europe alone for treatment of the disease, that if left undetected can kill you. Diabetes strikes by causing inadequate blood sugar control in the body which can lead heart disease and strokes.
IMPORTANT FACT: Of all the developed nations in the world, the United States has the highest number of diabetes cases. Wahoo, the United States is still number one at something! [BBC]
