There are just too many laws in this country. YOU ARE NOT NEARLY AS FREE AS YOU THINK YOU ARE! We are totally over-governed as Americans. You can now add circumcision to this list of possible laws you will be governed under.
This November, voters in San Francisco are going to vote on whether parents should be allowed to circumcise their baby boys. The proposition, backed by members of an anti-circumcision group that calls its members “intactivists,” has ignited heated debate.
Circumcision as a practice has been around before good ole’ Jesus was born. According to the trusty WIKIPEDIA :
Male circumcision is the surgical removal of some or all of the foreskin (prepuce) from the penis. The word comes from Latin circum (meaning “around”) and cædere (meaning “to cut”). Early depictions of circumcision are found in cave paintings and Ancient Egyptian tombs, though some pictures are open to interpretation. Religious male circumcision is considered a commandment from God in Judaism. In Islam, though not discussed in the Qur’an, male circumcision is widely practiced and most often considered to be a sunnah. It is also customary in some Christian churches in Africa, including some Oriental Orthodox Churches. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global estimates suggest that 30% of males are circumcised, of whom 68% are Muslim. The prevalence of circumcision varies mostly with religious affiliation, and sometimes culture.
Since then, the practice has gone in and out of public favor for myriad reasons, including hygiene, religion, cultural norms and beliefs about masculinity. Circumcised men are now in the minority worldwide, but they are the vast majority in the U.S.
Major medical associations have not yet taken a stance. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that circumcision has both risks and benefits and that parents should be given all the information available to make an informed decision. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working on recommendations regarding the practice, but they have yet to be released.
Several Jewish organizations have weighed in against the ban as well, pointing out that circumcision rituals play an important historical role for many Jews. Under the proposed law, adults would be free to opt-in to circumcision, but infants would not be allowed to have the procedure until they reach 18.
If it passes, those caught cutting foreskins would face a fine of $1,000 and a year in prison. Only people over the age of 18 would be allowed to have their foreskins removed. (Are you serious, who in their right mind would do this at 18!!! The whole point to having it done as a baby is so that you DON’T KNOW what the hell is going on!!!)
In the meantime, those in favor of circumcision say it promotes health and hygiene, while those opposed say it’s an unnecessary medical procedure that amounts to mutilation. One man, Matt Hess, has taken this to a very sad extreme, coming up with a propaganda comic known as FORESKIN MAN. The comic is being called anti-Semitic, and really is just plain strange.
I will say this. As a Jew, I am circumcised. My rabbi did a remarkable job, that I am quite proud of. Never had one complaint, or snicker, or the dreaded, “Oh My God, that is gross!” Personally, I think it just looks better circumcised, and that is besides all the other benefits. I also have no problems with sensitivity at all. I guess I am lucky. And when I have my first son,$1000 fine or not, his little “schmeckle” is getting cut!!!

Next thing they’ll be telling us we can’t shake our babies, or leave them unattended in hot cars, or let our dogs chew on them! The absurdity of this nanny state!

On a more serious note, however, I must point out that when there was a bill proposed to ban Female Genital Mutilation, many Muslim groups stood up and said that it violated their religious rights, that it was a sacred procedure that went back thousands of years, and that it promoted better hygiene and prevented disease.
Also, why is it ok to do something to an infant that nobody “in their right mind would do this at 18″, just because they are too young to understand, complain, or say no? To me, that simply reeks of the most horrific of human rights violations. Everyone should have the right to choose for themselves what religion they will be, and what parts of their bodies will be altered, when they are old enough and mature enough to make said decision. Until then, the parents must protect them from harm and guide them in the best way they know how. Not subject them to ritual sacrifices of their body parts under the premise that “they won’t remember”.

You admit that very few adult males would volunteer for circumcision when they’re of-age, and you don’t see how doing it to a child is questionable? Babies feel pain just like adults, they just can’t express it.
It comes down to an issue of choice. Cicumcision is not reversible, so doing it to a child before they can make the choice themselves is a violation of their rights.

The United States government already tells us that we cannot forcefully cut the genitals of girls, and soon boys will have the same protection. God bless America for finally waking up and taking responsibility for the protection of all children from forced genital cutting.

Other things that have been around since before Jesus and were considered religious rites (and rights):
Human sacrifice
Rape
Child molestation
Female genital mutilation
Slavery
Racial hate
War
Gender-based oppression
In the end, when you circumcise a baby, you’re cutting off a piece of his body. What if some new start-up religion began cutting the boneless portion of their newborns’ noses off and claimed that it was a sacrament and commandment from God? I bet you’d be against that. Each person should make their own choices regarding their bodies, and shouldn’t be forced into such barbarism.

Although I am happy to be circumcised I agree with the rest of the comments here… no one should be permanently altering babies’ genitals. It is a violation of their rights. I would probably be happy uncircumcised just as well, if that had been the case.
Circumcise the World
I was circumcised just like my Pappy and my Pappy’s Pappy! My three sons are all circumcised, and if I could I would circumcise my only daughter.
That being said, I have been in enough locker rooms, and have seen my fair share. I would choose my army helmet over a disgusting, stinky, elephant trunk every day of the week!!
